Introduction

This is Nima Giri, a dedicated advocate and emerging leader from Nepal, from a remote village in the Pyuthan district. She currently serves as a member of the Provincial Assembly for Lumbini Province. Neema began her political career at a young age, becoming the youngest woman representative elected to the National Council Committee of the Nepali Congress Party in 2010. She has since advanced to the role of Assistant Secretary General of the party for Lumbini Province. Growing up in a district where many residents live below the poverty line, lack access to quality education and equal employment opportunities, Neema recognized early on that meaningful change requires political intervention. Despite the predominant support for communist ideologies in her locality, she remained steadfast in her belief that development must respect the fundamental democratic rights of individuals to freely express themselves and participate in the democratic process. Neema’s career has flourished in two significant areas: as a distinguished legal practitioner, for which she has been honored as the best lawyer in her home district, and through her active involvement in student politics, where she served as Vice President of the Central Department at Tribhuvan University. As a lawmaker, Neema introduced the innovative concept of a Provincial Planning Bank, which aims to allocate equitable budgets across all wards for essential services such as education, health, agriculture, infrastructure, and utilities, based on data-driven assessments rather than arbitrary distributions influenced by political access and affiliations. This proposal is currently pending a vote in parliament to be enacted into law. Additionally, Neema initiated the formation of a parliamentary sub-committee aimed at addressing health issues arising from the consumption of harmful substances, as well as combating domestic violence related to alcohol use. Notably, Neema has made significant strides within the Nepali Congress Party by leading a delegation to ensure that women are afforded equal opportunities to express their views in formal programmes, which have traditionally been male-dominated. In recognition of her exemplary contributions to both the legal and political spheres, Neema was awarded the Janaseva Shri Vibhushan medal by the former President of Nepal Bidya Devi Bhandari.
